For many executives and IT managers, this acceleration creates a legitimate concern. Are our systems still protected? Has our website become an easier target? Do we need to replace everything, update everything, and above all, if we invest now, will we have to start all over again in six months?

The good news is that the answer is neither panic nor inaction. AI mainly changes the speed and scale of attacks, far more than their underlying principles. Companies with solid foundations are already in a good position. Those that have fallen behind need to act, but methodically. This article helps you understand what is really changing, what to prioritize, who to entrust the work to and how to avoid throwing your money down the drain.

What AI really changes about threats

Cyberattacks existed long before generative AI. Phishing, password theft, exploitation of unpatched vulnerabilities, ransomware: the major families of threats remain the same. What is changing is how easily an attacker can carry them out, and the quality of the result.

More convincing scams

In the past, a fraudulent email could often be spotted by its spelling mistakes or awkward wording. Today, an AI tool can write a perfectly worded message in seconds, tailored to the company’s industry, mimicking the tone of a supplier or colleague. Voice imitations and deepfake videos add another layer: a call that seems to come from the CFO asking for an urgent wire transfer is no longer science fiction.

Faster and more frequent attacks

AI also helps attackers analyze websites, identify vulnerable software versions or write malicious code faster. The time between the disclosure of a vulnerability and its exploitation tends to be shrinking. A company that lets its updates sit for weeks is therefore taking a greater risk than before.

New internal risks

AI also creates risks on the company’s own side. Employees paste confidential documents into online assistants without knowing where that data goes. Chatbots installed on a website can be manipulated into disclosing information or making inappropriate statements. Tools connected to email or internal files are granted very broad access, sometimes without any real oversight.

Personalized, error-free phishing that is much harder to detect

Voice or image impersonation to obtain wire transfers or access

Automated scanning for vulnerabilities on exposed websites and servers

Data leaks through unregulated use of public AI tools

Manipulation of assistants and chatbots integrated into company services

Replace everything or update everything?

Faced with these threats, it is tempting to want to replace the entire IT infrastructure or buy the latest AI-branded solution. In the vast majority of cases, this is neither necessary nor desirable. Security rests first and foremost on basic practices, properly applied and maintained over time.

What needs to be replaced

Some elements genuinely need to be replaced. These are mainly systems that no longer receive security patches: old operating system versions, obsolete servers, website plugins abandoned by their developers, end-of-life routers or firewalls. Equipment that is no longer updated is an open door, with or without AI.

What needs to be updated and strengthened

For everything else, the key is to keep what already exists up to date and strengthen it. This includes workstations, business software, the website’s content management system, its themes and plugins, as well as the online services used every day. Regular updating remains one of the most effective and least expensive measures.

Enable multi-factor authentication on all sensitive accounts, especially email and administrator access

Apply security updates promptly, ideally automatically

Limit access rights to the strict minimum for each user and each tool

Set up regular backups that are isolated from the main network and tested

Monitor unusual logins and changes to the website

Remove accounts, plugins and services that are no longer in use

Governing internal use of AI

An often overlooked point is defining clear rules on how teams use AI tools. What data can be entered into them? Which tools are authorized? Who approves adding a new assistant connected to company systems? A simple policy, explained to everyone, prevents many accidental leaks. It is better to offer an approved, supervised tool than to let everyone use free services whose terms nobody knows.

When to act and in what order

The question of timing is simple: you need to start now, but not haphazardly. Waiting for the technology to stabilize is a mistake, because attackers are not waiting. Conversely, launching everything at once exhausts teams and budgets without guaranteeing results.

Step 1: take inventory

You can only properly protect what you know about. List your equipment, software, accounts, online services, websites and AI tools in use, whether officially or not. Identify your most sensitive data: customer information, financial data, intellectual property, personnel files.

Step 2: address the most serious risks

Start with what poses the greatest danger for the least effort. Multi-factor authentication, patching systems that have not been updated and verifying backups generally top the list. These are quick actions that block a large share of common attacks.

Step 3: train your teams

Since AI makes scams more convincing, human vigilance becomes central. Train your staff to recognize modern fraud attempts and, above all, put verification procedures in place. For example, any request for a wire transfer or a change of banking details should be confirmed through a second channel, such as a callback to a known number. This simple rule neutralizes most impersonations, even highly realistic ones.

Step 4: plan the rest

Once the urgent matters are handled, draw up a realistic plan spanning several months: gradual replacement of end-of-life equipment, a website audit, setting up monitoring, reviewing supplier contracts. Also prepare a response plan: who to call, what to do and how to communicate in the event of an incident.

Who to trust

The cybersecurity market is crowded, and AI has given rise to a multitude of offerings promising total, automatic protection. It is important to keep a cool head. No tool, however intelligent, can replace rigorous organization.

Good signs

A provider who starts by understanding your business and your risks before proposing a product

Clear explanations, without needless jargon or alarmist rhetoric

Verifiable references from companies of comparable size and industry

Transparency about where your data is stored and who has access to it

Specific commitments on response times and ongoing follow-up

Recognized certifications or qualifications in the security field

Warning signs

Be wary of vendors who play on fear to get a quick signature, who promise absolute security or who push you to replace everything without a prior assessment. Also be cautious with solutions whose inner workings remain opaque or that require very broad access to your systems without clear justification.

Public resources

Your country’s public cybersecurity agencies often publish free guides, lists of best practices and directories of recognized providers. These are excellent starting points for assessing your situation and checking a supplier’s credibility. Internally, trust is also built by designating a person responsible for the topic, even in a small organization, so that security does not end up being nobody’s job.

Will everything need to be redone in six months?

This is probably the most widespread fear: investing today only to discover that everything is outdated tomorrow. The concern is understandable, because AI tools are indeed evolving very quickly. But it rests on a misunderstanding.

The foundations of security do not go out of style. Strong authentication, regular updates, reliable backups, access restrictions, team training and verification procedures will remain relevant whatever the next advances in AI may be. What you build on these foundations does not need to be redone; it needs to be maintained.

Think in cycles rather than projects

Security is not a project you finish; it is an ongoing cycle. Rather than aiming for a one-off, spectacular transformation, it is better to establish a routine: regular access reviews, continuous patching, monitoring of new threats, awareness reminders for teams. In this model, changes in AI become simple adjustments, not costly revolutions.

Choose scalable solutions

To limit the risk of obsolescence, favor tools that are updated automatically by their vendor, subscriptions rather than fixed purchases when it makes sense, and solutions compatible with open standards. Avoid locking yourself into a single supplier that would be difficult to leave. Finally, keep clear documentation of your environment: it will make every future change easier.

Conclusion

Artificial intelligence does not make everything companies have put in place obsolete, but it makes every delay and every oversight more costly. There is no need to change everything: replace what is no longer maintained, update and strengthen the rest, govern internal use of AI and train teams to deal with more convincing scams.

The right time to act is now, starting with an inventory and the most effective measures. Surround yourself with transparent partners who start from your real needs, and be wary of miracle promises. Above all, treat security as a habit rather than a one-off project. A solid foundation, maintained regularly, will not need to be redone in six months: on the contrary, it will allow you to adopt the next advances in AI with confidence.

Artificial intelligence makes cyberattacks faster and more convincing, pushing businesses to rethink their systems, websites and tools.
